How Long Does It Take to Recover After Sclerotherapy?

At VENUS Vein Clinic in Omaha, NE, we are passionate about helping our clients improve their vein health and confidence. Many people come in struggling with spider veins and varicose veins: disordered veins that can make people feel self-conscious and develop health complications. Today, we’re taking a closer look at sclerotherapy recovery to help you decide if it is a good fit for you.

How Long Does It Take to Recover After Sclerotherapy?

Many factors affect the sclerotherapy recovery timeline, including the extent of the treatment and how well you care for yourself once your disordered veins have been treated. You should be able to return to work as soon as we have reviewed your aftercare guidelines, but your unique case may vary depending on the nature of your job. You should strongly consider taking a few days off from work to allow your treated areas to heal if you have a strenuous job.

What Can I Do to Recover From My Disordered Vein Treatment Faster?

To recover from your disordered vein treatment as quickly as possible, you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and take excellent care of the treated areas. For example, you should make plenty of time to get gentle aerobic exercise, and you should take care to not overexert yourself.

One highly effective way to care for your treated areas is to wear compression garments for three to seven days depending on the type of blood vessels treated and other factors. Generally, you should wear your compression garments longer if blue vessels are treated. Another important aftercare guideline to follow if you want to heal as quickly as possible is to avoid excessive heat exposure.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

The only way to know definitively if you are a good sclerotherapy candidate is to sit down with a vascular expert and discuss your health, concerns, and goals. If you are a relatively healthy adult and neither pregnant nor nursing, this treatment may be safe for you. However, we need to discuss your medical history before we can confirm that you are free from contraindications.

Could I Benefit From This Treatment?

Often, people who get this treatment simply have cosmetic concerns caused by varicose veins or spider veins. This treatment can increase your confidence significantly if you feel self-conscious due to visibly disordered veins. This treatment can also benefit you significantly if you want to eliminate the risk of health complications that can arise due to varicose veins.

What Health Complications Can Varicose Veins Cause?

Varicose veins can lead to the development of numerous medical conditions, including venous ulcers, or open wounds that develop. Depending on where ulcers form, they can be painful, and they often heal slowly and get infected. Superficial thrombophlebitis is another that can develop due to disordered veins. This condition usually causes veins near the skin’s surface to become inflamed, and it often involves the formation of a blood clot.

Another potential complication of varicose veins is chronic venous insufficiency, or CVI. This condition is caused by the valves in the veins becoming weakened or damaged. These malfunctioning valves cause inefficient blood flow back to the heart. Other complications that may arise include bleeding and deep vein thrombosis.

Are There Any Preparation Steps I Will Need to Take Before My Treatment Session?

Yes, there are several preparation steps you will need to take prior to your treatment session. It is extremely important that your blood pressure be normal and your blood able to clot normally, so some of the most important preparation steps prior to treatment are to not smoke or drink alcohol and discontinue the use of blood-thinners or anticoagulants. We will advise you on everything you will need to avoid prior to treatment when you meet with our vascular expert.

It is also extremely important that you are hydrated when you come in for your appointment. Make sure that you drink plenty of water and eat lots of hydrating foods before you come in for your appointment. Also, make sure that when you come in for your appointment that your skin is free from irritation, and you are wearing comfortable clothing. The targeted areas should not be sunburned, infected, or experiencing any other form of irritation.

What Should I Expect During My Treatment Session?

Before your treatment begins, we will inspect your targeted areas to confirm that they are free from irritation, and we will make sure that there are no other contraindications to ensure that your treatment will go smoothly. Then, we will sanitize your targeted areas to mitigate the risk of an infection. After that, we will inject the sclerosant into the walls of the disordered veins.

Schedule Your Initial Consultation Today

Restrictions after sclerotherapy will only last for three to five days, and there is often no downtime required after treatment. However, you may need to wear a compression garment for up to a week depending on the type of vein treated. If you have spider veins or varicose veins that need to be treated, contact us now at VENUS Vein Clinic in Omaha, NE to schedule an initial consultation and find out which treatment method is right for you.
