What Is the Success Rate of Varithena?

varithena

Do you have discolored, rope-like veins bulging against your skin? Do you have skin discoloration, burning, or itchiness in your legs, hands, or throat? If so, you may be among the 30% of adults who suffer from varicose veins. At VENUS Vein Clinic in Omaha, NE, we strongly believe that everyone should be comfortable in their skin. We proudly offer several varicose vein treatment methods, including Varithena. Read on to learn more about this incredible treatment.

What Is the Success Rate of Varithena?

Varithena has a 94% success rate. In addition to being almost 100% effective, there are a number of other benefits associated with this treatment. For instance, there are no incisions or stitches involved. Due to the minimally-invasive nature of this treatment, there is no general anesthesia required. Due to the lack of general anesthesia, there is no downtime required after the treatment.

What Should I Expect Before My Treatment?

Before your treatment, you will need to sit down with a vascular expert to verify that this treatment is appropriate for you. If it is, you will need to take several preparation steps. For example, you will need to purchase a compression garment and wear it for three to four days before your treatment to ensure it fits appropriately. Furthermore, you will need to bring this garment to your appointment. You must wear it as soon as your treatment is over.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

Generally, a good Varithena candidate has tortuous veins above or below the knee. These veins may be small, medium, or large in diameter, and this treatment may be effective even if other methods proved ineffective previously. During your initial consultation, we will thoroughly review your medical history to ensure there are no contraindications. Let us know if you have reduced mobility. It is very important that you walk for 20 to 30 minutes after your treatment.

Also, we need to know if you are or were recently pregnant. Similarly, we need to know if you have undergone a major surgical procedure in the past three months or had a prolonged hospital stay recently. Common contraindications for this treatment include arterial disease, blood vessel clots, an allergy to polidocanol, and a history of blood clots in the lungs or veins.

What Should I Expect During My Treatment?

You can expect your treatment to be short and sweet. It usually takes around 15 minutes to complete, but the severity of the varicose veins can vary. To ensure your comfort during your treatment, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Then, we will use highly advanced ultrasound technology to place the catheter inside the treated vein. Once that’s done, we will administer a small dose of the foam into the vein.

The foam is the key to this treatment’s near-perfect success rate. It evenly fills the vein, displacing the blood. The absence of blood results in vein spasming. After spasming, the vein collapses and closes. To ensure the vein closes completely, a small amount of pressure will be applied to the vein. Once your treatment is complete, the tape will be applied to the catheter insertion point.

What Should I Expect After My Treatment?

After your treatment is complete, a pressure bandage will be applied to the treated area. Generally, you will need to wear this pressure bandage and a compression garment for 24 hours after your treatment. In some cases, people need to wear this compression garment for a few days post-treatment. Due to the minimally-invasive nature of this treatment, you can get back to most of your usual routine right away.

However, it is highly advisable to not engage in vigorous physical activity for seven days post-treatment. Furthermore, you should not be sedentary for long periods. If your job involves standing or sitting in one place for hours at a time, set an alarm on your phone to remind you to walk around for a bit. Light activity is strongly recommended, especially immediately after your treatment.

Are There Any Other Post-Treatment Guidelines I Should Know About?

You should avoid excessive heat and sunlight exposure for two to three days following your treatment. Also, you should refrain from using ice in your treatment area.

Do I Need Treatment?

It’s not uncommon for people with varicose veins to think that they only have a cosmetic problem. However, there are several complications that can occur if varicose veins are left untreated. Even if you are only experiencing mild or moderate symptoms right now, you should strongly consider seeking treatment to mitigate your risk of:

  • Blood clots
  • Ulcers
  • Bleeding
