Are you tired of always trying to hide your legs due to varicose veins? Do you lack the confidence you used to have because of this condition? At Venus Vein Clinic in Omaha, Nebraska we believe that no one should have to stop wearing shorts because of varicose veins. We use the most up-to-date venous ablation technologies to help you experience your best self. Read on to discover exactly what this treatment is and what to expect from it.
What Should You Expect From Venous Ablation?
Venous ablation procedure is a process by which varicose veins are closed off. The blood is redirected to healthier veins while the varicose vein is absorbed by the surrounding tissues, gradually fading from sight. This treatment option is quick, effective, and requires very minimal downtime to recover. Many patients prefer this method because it tends to be more comfortable than other surgical approaches.
Varicose Veins Explained
Varicose veins are twisted and bulging blue veins just below the surface of the skin. They have become enlarged from increased pressure. When the one-way valves in the veins become damaged or weak, blood can pool in these damaged areas. Varicose veins typically do not go away on their own and can lead to aching pain, muscle cramps, and swelling. Occasionally varicose veins can lead to more serious problems such as ulcers and blood clots.
Varicose veins typically form in the legs due to the increased pressure required to pump the blood back up to the heart, fighting gravity all the way. As we age, the valves within the veins become weaker. Other contributing factors could be genetics, obesity, pregnancy, and underlying circulatory conditions. Standing or sitting for long periods of time can also cause varicose veins as blood has a harder time flowing when we are in the same position extensively.
Radiofrequency Ablation
We offer two types of venous ablation therapies at Venus Vein Clinic. First, let’s talk about radiofrequency ablation. This state-of-the-art treatment aims to address not only the symptoms but also the underlying cause of the condition. Most patients experience improvement after just one session.
To begin the treatment, Dr. Kelly Schroeder will insert a small catheter (a flexible tube) into the problem area through a tiny incision. Radiofrequency therapy is used to heat up the varicose vein from the inside. This stimulates collagen contraction, causing the vein to break down and seal itself off. Blood is diverted to healthier veins while the collapsed varicose vein is processed and absorbed by the surrounding tissues. This results in a clear complexion as the varicose vein disappears.
Venaseal Ablation
Venaseal ablation achieves the same goal by different means. During this treatment, an integral venous lesion that is causing other veins to become varicose is located. A venous lesion is a malformation in the vein that causes areas of low blood flow. In some cases, these lesions are present from birth.
During this treatment, the doctor will make a very small incision and insert a catheter into the main saphenous vein (a large superficial vein) found in the thigh. The vein will be sealed off using medical-grade adhesive. This adhesive is very durable, lasting many years. Blood flow that previously went through this vein is redirected to healthier veins in the area. The body will process the closed-off vein as scar tissue, causing it to fade from sight.
How Do I Know If Venous Ablation Is the Right Treatment for Me?
As every case is completely unique, we will start with a medical exam and evaluate your condition. Our Registered Nurse will review your medical history. Dr. Schroeder will then do a physical examination, ordering venous diagnostics to get a better idea of what is going on in your vascular system. Next, our Registered Vascular Technician will perform a vascular ultrasound. Dr. Shroeder will review the results of the ultrasound and come up with a comprehensive plan of action.
All of the aforementioned assessments will be done in the same visit. Our healthcare professional’s findings will be shared with you and all of your treatment options will be explained and discussed with you before you leave. Any questions or concerns you have will be addressed before the end of your appointment. The entire evaluation will only take about an hour. Upon deciding on the best course of action, you can schedule your next appointment.
