All About Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

Are you unhappy with the appearance of varicose veins in places such as your legs? This common condition affects many people, particularly those who are older or overweight. Properly functioning veins will allow blood to flow in only one direction: back to the heart. Varicose veins are dysfunctional veins that allow blood to return and pool into them, leading to their characteristic twisted and ropey appearance. If you are dealing with this unfortunate problem, you may wish to consider varicose veins treatment options.

What are Varicose Veins?

A vein is a blood vessel responsible for transporting blood to the heart. Some veins can become dysfunctional for reasons that are not always clear. Veins contain one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing back into them. Varicose veins are abnormal veins that have dysfunctional one-way valves. Since these valves are not working properly, they allow blood to collect into them and distort their appearance.

Varicose veins are typically found on the legs, although they may appear in other areas. They do not normally cause symptoms, although they may sometimes cause aches and pains. For most people, their presence alone prompts the search for treatment.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a varicose veins treatment that has been used since the 1930s in the United States. It involves the injection of a sclerosing solution that collapses the walls of the dysfunctional vein, which is then absorbed by the body. The blood that once flowed through this problem vein is then rerouted into healthier blood vessels nearby.

You should take a short walk right after your sclerotherapy treatment and plan on walking for about half an hour per day for a couple of weeks. Avoid vigorous exercise for a day or two. You will need to wear compression stockings for a period after your sclerotherapy procedure. This helps to enhance blood flow in your legs.
