How Long Does It Take for Varithena To Work?

varithena
Varithena is an injectable prescription medication designed to irritate the walls of varicose veins. In as little as one injection session at VENUS Vein Clinic in Omaha, NE, you can say goodbye to your itchy, painful varicose veins once and for all. Are you interested in learning more about this treatment? Keep reading to find out how long it takes to work, what the recovery period is like, and more.

How Long Does It Take for Varithena To Work?

You will feel and see the initial results of treatment immediately. However, you may not see and feel your final results for a week or two. In extreme cases, more than one treatment session will be required for your varicose veins to be eliminated completely.

For How Long Will I Need to Wear My Compression Garment?

You will need to wear your compression garment for 24 hours following your treatment. Then, you will need to wear it for 13 more days, taking it off only to sleep at night.

What Other Aftercare Steps Will I Need To Take?

During the first 14 days following your injection session, it is very important that you walk for at least 10 minutes daily. It is also very important that you avoid prolonged periods of inactivity. In other words, if you have a job that requires you to sit or stand for hours at a time, take a break every hour to do some gentle calisthenics or stretches. We cannot overstate how important it is that you keep your blood flowing adequately.

Can I Take a Bath After My Treatment?

No, you may not bathe or shower within 48 hours of your treatment. It is of the utmost importance that you keep your treatment area dry for two days. If you want to wash your hair before you go to work the day after your treatment, you can use dry shampoo.

Is There Any Downtime Following This Treatment?

No, there is no downtime required following Varithena treatment. However, you should keep in mind that in addition to keeping the treatment area dry for 48 hours, you must refrain from vigorous activity for 10 days after your treatment. If you have a sedentary job, you are free to return to work as soon as your treatment is complete and we have finished reviewing your aftercare instructions with you.

What Can I Expect During My Treatment Session?

Before your treatment session begins, we will evaluate the treatment area to verify that the skin is not irritated. If your skin is irritated at the time of your treatment, your session must be rescheduled. If your skin is not irritated, we will use an alcohol-based sanitizer to clean the treatment area. Then, we will administer the medication.

Whether the medication is administered via catheter or injection depends on the scope of the treatment and your personal preference. If the medication is being administered via a catheter, we will make a tiny incision to insert the catheter through and suture it shut when we are done. Either way, you should not expect your treatment to take a full hour.

How Long Do the Results of This Treatment Last?

The results of this treatment are considered permanent because the treated veins will never bother you again. When the medication irritates the vein wall, it collapses in on itself, and blood is rerouted to healthier veins in the area. Without blood, the veins starve, die, and get absorbed into nearby healthy tissue.

However, we recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your treatment to mitigate the risk that currently, healthy veins will become varicose in the future. This is particularly true if you have risk factors of developing varicose veins, like a family history of varicose veins, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, or high blood pressure. Pregnancy is another significant weight factor so you should take all of the preventative steps you can if you plan to be with child.

What Lifestyle Choices Can I Make To Reduce My Chance of Developing Varicose Veins?

Weight management is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your chance of developing varicose veins. This is because obesity is a very significant risk factor for the condition. Ideally, you should maintain a healthy weight. However, if you are obese, you can significantly reduce your chance of developing varicose veins just by getting down to the overweight category on the BMI chart.

Physical activity is another important preventative measure you can take. The more you work your cardiovascular system, the healthier and stronger your cardiovascular system will be. If you’re happy with your weight, get at least 2.5 hours of exercise every week. If you’re trying to lose weight, get in five hours of exercise weekly.

Learn How You Can Eliminate Your Varicose Veins Today

Varithena can eliminate your varicose veins in as little as one to two weeks. However, it will take closer to three weeks to see the final results of your treatment if you need a second session five days after your first session. If you are ready to say goodbye to your varicose veins, schedule a Varithena consultation with us at VENUS Vein Clinic in Omaha, NE.
