How Long Does Sclerotherapy Last?

Sclerotherapy

The appearance of spider veins and varicose veins on your legs can cause self-consciousness, but fortunately, there are vein treatments that can eliminate these vein concerns. One of the best treatments for correcting spider veins and varicose veins is sclerotherapy, a unique minimally invasive treatment that can produce long-lasting results. Learn more about this treatment before you schedule your first appointment at VENUS Vein Clinic in Omaha, NE.

How Long Does Sclerotherapy Last?

Generally speaking, the results of sclerotherapy are both permanent and temporary. These results can be permanent because veins that are treated will fade away, but because new spider of varicose veins can develop over time, the results are also temporary.

One of the determining factors for how long your results will last is your genetics, as hereditary factors may make it more likely for you to develop these vein concerns. Your weight, health, genetics, medications, and other lifestyle factors may also determine how long your results last.

How Soon Will You See Results?

One huge benefit of this treatment is how quickly you will be able to see your results. For the treatment of spider veins, you will be able to see the results as soon as three to six weeks after your appointment.

For varicose veins, it may take up to three to four months before you will see visible results. Ultimately, you will be able to see the results of this Sclerotherapy treatment based on how well your body reacts to the salt-based solution.

How Does This Treatment Work?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive injectable treatment that works by irritating the vein wall to then collapse and eliminate spider and varicose veins. The salt-based solution will be injected directly into the affected veins, which will damage the vein wall without harming surrounding tissue.

Once the vein has collapsed, it will be converted into fibrous tissue and new veins or healthy veins will replace the collapsed vein so your circulatory system will function normally.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

The number of treatments you will need will depend on the severity of your vein condition. Most people will need at least two to four treatments to correct spider veins or mild varicose veins. For more severe varicose veins or the treatment of multiple veins, you may need additional treatments. Each of your treatments will be scheduled about one month apart.

How Should You Prepare for Treatment?

You will not need to make many preparations for your treatment. You can continue taking your medications as usual, you will not need to arrange for transport, and you will not need to fast before your appointment. However, we recommend that you buy compression stockings to use after your treatment, as the stockings will encourage healthy blood flow after your treatment.

What Should You Expect From Your Treatment?

Your appointments will take about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Before your injections, your treatment areas will be cleaned and sterilized. Then the salt-based solution will be administered with a fine needle. The number of injections you will need and the amount of solution required for your treatment will depend on the severity and location of your vein concerns.

What Should You Do After Your Treatment?

The most important portion of this treatment will happen after your appointment. Immediately after your treatment, you will need to follow certain guidelines, such as avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and vigorous exercise for at least five to seven days. You should also avoid heat, direct sunlight, hot water, steam, and hot tubs.

You will need to wear compression stockings for most of the day for at least one to two weeks, particularly when you are on your feet. We also encourage patients to walk around often, or at least for a half-hour each day for the first two weeks after your treatment.

What’s the Difference Between Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Spider veins are small, branch-like veins and capillaries that rise to the skin surface. Sometimes these web-like veins can appear red, purple, or blue, and they often appear on the upper and lower thighs.

Varicose veins, on the other hand, tend to appear on the calves and have a more pronounced appearance. Varicose veins are characterized by bulging or twisting shapes that create bumps beneath the skin. As a note, neither spider veins nor varicose veins are indicators of any health conditions, as these are largely cosmetic conditions.

Are You a Candidate?

Although spider veins and varicose veins are more common for women, men are also eligible for this treatment. However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not qualified for treatment. If you have a history of blood clots, then you may not be eligible. Generally, your eligibility for this treatment will depend on your general health, your lifestyle, and the condition of your veins. The vast majority of people who are interesting in this treatment are qualified.
